First off, let me say that I am a huge fan of William Castle and was delighted when I discovered this book had been published. I say this so you'll know my personal biases up front. If you are not like minded, this review won't serve much purpose.The reason I was delighted is that I've felt for a very long time that Mr. Castle's films warranted far more serious study than they had been afforded. The reason for this neglect is obvious. Because of his emphasis on showmanship and his unequaled reign as the King of the Gimmick, the films have kind of taken a back seat to the ballyhoo. In other words, historians and critics have not been able to see the forest for the flying skeletons and under-the- seats joy buzzers. That, at least till now, was unfortunate because he also was very creative and capable when it came to putting the best entertainment he could up on the screen. The proof is HOUSE ON HAUNTED HILL and THE TINGLER. If these weren't two of the best horror films of their era, they were arguably the most fun. I happen to believe they were both, but the "fun" aspects of these films has overshadowed their other merits and caused them to be easily dismissed. I think it's time for a serious rethinking and appraisal of his work. This book provides an excellent starting point for this to happen.
At first, readers may be put off by the skimpy backstory and even skimpier amount of illustrations that precede the actual script but that would be missing the point. I do feel it would have been nice to include more photos, but the backstory is the script itself.
This is a very clearly reproduced copy of William Castle's personal script used while making the film. That in and of itself makes this a valuable if not important document in horror film history, but his handwritten notes (at times VERY copious) really demonstrate how the film evolved from page to screen. Some revisions to the Robb White script are small and subtle and in other cases drastic, but they all show us Mr. Castle's creative mind at work. It's fascinating to read and also makes a very strong argument that he was far more than a brilliant pitchman only good at suckering people into the theater. He, dare I say, had a very strong vision of the movie he wanted to make. The guy REALLY knew what he was doing.
Published by William Castle's daughter (and including a very moving tribute written by her for her dad), I urge all fans to pick up a copy of this gem. Hopefully it will be successful enough for Ms. Castle to share even more of her father's personal treasures with us. That would be great.
I strongly recommend this book for all Fifties horror film fans and anyone interested in how a film evolves from raw ideas and words to the images on the screen. Both will be pleased by this publication.
By the way.. what book concerning William Castle could be valid without it's very own gimmick? Never fear, the Castle spirit is alive and well. The margins of the pages contain a flipbook of a moving skeleton. Not a major selling point, I admit, but like his films it's tons of fun and very cool.

Very good script. It doesn't follow the movie close by any means. Even if you omit the mistakes and corrections in the script, it doesn't really line up with the dialog very well. I'm no screenwriter, so I'm not sure what to look for, but it's a nice book to add to my Vincent Price book collection.
This is a must own book for William Castle fans. Period. However, it is also a must own for any fans of film.
How often does one get to hold in their hands a copy of the shooting script from a film, with the directors notes in the columns? The original "House on Haunted Hill" is one of the iconic films of the horror genre. When folks look at what a "haunted house" movie should be, THIS is what comes to mind. It's a treat to have and own to see Bill Castle's thought process through out.
Add to that, your own " home version of Emergo", which is the "gimmick" used in the theatre in which the skeleton came off the screen across the audience. Now, you have the chance to have the skeleton himself) off the pages of this book and into your lap or in your pants) depending.
The lovingly written words from Terry Castle's Bill daughter certainly shows that the acorn didn't fall far from the tree or bone fall from the mausoleum. Joe Dante wrote a great into as well.
Film Fan? William Castle Fan" Vincent Price or even Elisha Cook, Jr that drunken sot fan this book is for you. A proud addition to your book shelf, that is even if you're able to put it down.

A wonderful historical document -- a carefully reproduced copy of the original shooting script of this Vincent Price horror classic, complete with all the notes/markings made by producer/director William Castle!
It's great fun to have the original script annotated with William Castle's copious notes and revisions. A wonderful book for fans of this classic spook fest!
As a child I have fond memories of watching William Castle's films on the big screen. Yes, they are schlocky and silly and not really scary by todays standards, but they are a piece of film history for anyone who is a horror movie buff. I was so happy to find this book after reading Castle's autobiography (well worth reading if you haven't already). So glad this kind of thing is available for those of us who like to collect movie memorabilia.
It's interesting to read a shooting script with director's notes. These notes were written in pencil and, by the way the HOUSE ON HAUNTED HILL screenplay was printed/published, they look as if they can still be erased but of course they can't.
It's also interesting to see the differences between the screenplay and the notes while watching the finished film.
There aren't any notes in terms of character development or intentions. They all pertain to actions, changes in dialogue and scenes, camera angles and editing.
If you enjoy the film or are a real William Castle fan or just want to see what a screenplay look likes with a director's notations, then the HOUSE ON HAUNTED HILL screenplay is a must have.
